Profile Focused on
a Person, but not a biography
Objective:
Focus on a person, place, or thing and
describe the “personality” of her/him/it, not a biography or simple description. This essay works best if you focus on just
one or two aspects of the personality, especially when talking about a
person. For example, if one of your
parents is strict, hard-working, financially responsible (almost to the point
of being stingy), and a jokester, you might focus your essay on the strict
& hard-working aspects of that parent’s personality. OR, you might focus on their more fun-loving,
joking side. You would not focus the essay
on all four items although you may mention them in passing if you feel it’s
necessary to your essay.
Your essay should include background
information that is necessary to your profile.
For example, if your essay focuses on a hard-working, stingy parent, it
is probably necessary to mention she/he grew up poor and/or with hard-working,
stingy parents, but watch just giving a listing biography. If your essay focuses on the funny, joking
side of the parent, growing up poor may or may not be necessary to the profile.
Details are important in this type of
writing. Rather than tell the reader something vague and broad (“He was funny,”
“She lived a hard life”) show the reader the gritty details, for instance, how
did being funny affect him, and how
was it a hard life? Use specific details to bring the scene to life, but be
sure to make certain that the details in your essay are there for a reason –
that they add up to a significant point.
Help make the connection between your
personal experience with this person, place or thing and potential
readers. What is the significance of
this person, place or thing in your life?
What makes this person, place or thing important enough to you that you
are willing to write an essay about her/him/it?
Guidelines:
- Find an
interesting subject – someone/something you are familiar with and have
some background information about.
- Focus on one
or two aspects of that person/thing’s personality.
- Stay focused
on those one or two aspects of that person/thing’s personality. Be cautious not to stray off topic. This essay should NOT be a general
biography of your topic but should be a focused essay on one or two small
aspects of that personality.
- For example, if you are talking about someone who loves to pull
pranks on people, you would include examples of those pranks. You would not include details of their
parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.
- Include any
necessary background information for the profile – do not include
information that is not relevant to your topic & the focus of your
essay.
Basic Requirements:
- 3-4 pages in
the essay’s final form.
- 12 point font,
1 inch margins, MLA style heading
