This assignment asks you to consider the way that the genre of horror functions according to specific tropes, or common elements across a broad range of works. A trope is something that you see more than once, and that you can identify with the broader genre of horror cinema. For instance, there is the trope of the harbinger--the guy who's working at a run down gas station and tells the teenagers in a van to go back. They of course ignore him to their peril and horror ensues. You get the idea, but

• Read over the list (it's ridiculously long, so you don't need to read the whole thing) and choose three tropes that you can identify in Night of the Living Dead. Make sure that each trope starts with a different letter--that way I know that you didn't just go through the tropes in the letter "A" and stop reading right away. 
• Once you've got your tropes, write a paragraph for each trope you've found, explaining where it appears in NOTLD with a reference to a time marker, using the Youtube time tracker for the film. Then, explain the trope and its intended effect. Describe the scene, let the reader know what's going on, and explain what the film is trying to do with the trope. Is it to scare the viewer? If so, how? Is it to get them to think? If so, how? What's it doing there, and what's its value to the film?

To be clear about the structure of this assignment, you should write three paragraphs. Each paragraph should focus on one of the three tropes you've chosen to write about, and should discuss that trope in-depth.
