Week Eight Overview

This week, we will examine the role news media plays in our society. You will synthesize your understanding of deregulation, freedom of speech, and the role of journalism to become an activist and reporter on your own right.

Watch Project Censorship: The Movie
Visit ProjectCensored.org
Find a candidate story to become a Validated Independent News Story
Write your story and submit as a blog for class (due Sunday)
I will submit your entry to Project Censored (This is a slight change. It will be easier if I compile and do them all at once!)

VIN: Project Censored

Read the following directions on how to create your Project Censored VIN. You will post this as a blog entry. I will then gather all of them and submit to Project Censored for publication consideration. I have had many Comm 271 students published in the past and it really looks great in your portfolio and on your resume.

You will find a candidate story to submit as a VIN. Your blog entry will be the same as the entry I will submit to Project Censored. Due Sunday night at 11:59 p.m.
I will compile your blog posts and submit on behalf of the class. You do not need to comment on classmate's blogs this week.

For more background on Project Censored, check out the Wikipedia page. There is a great section on criticism of the organization. Also, as with most Wikipedia pages, I enjoy the References as sort of a 'cookie crumb trail' of other related resources. Does the fact that I use Wikipedia pages in class mean that it is a good scholarly reference? No. I always say it is a good jumping-off point into the deep waters of research. Dive in!
