Dialectics of Intercultural Communication Of the six types of dialectics intercultural communication, I choose differences-similarities and cultural-individual. Differences-Similarities dialectics means that communication between individuals are similar and different since people are concurrently different and similar to each other. In this case, putting emphasis on the differences can result in prejudice and stereotyping, which should not be the case (Jones, 2013). A good example of differences- similarities is that Chinese and Americans communicate differently, just like men and women. Their way and pattern of communication may differ or be similar to each other. Cultural-individual dialectics means that individuals share the patterns of communication with group members which they belong to. The members may have a particular way in which they communicate and that what defines them to be members of the specific group (Jones, 2013). For instance, Emmanuelle, a fifth-generation Italian American, can communicate effectively like any other family members. Conversely, different patterns of communication differ; for example, gestures used in the communication process. There are ways in which dialectical tensions in intercultural interpersonal relationships can be managed. Through respecting and comprehension of the differences in the patterns of communication is the way in which they can be managed. It means that people will be aware of the ways other people are communicating. For instance, an American should comprehend that Chinese individuals are interested in individual relations in the process of communication. On the other hand, a Chinese should comprehend that the Americans are never concerned in personal relationships, and they are individualistic in their communication. Therefore, embracing the dialectical dissimilarities and respecting each one of them aids and enhances the process of communication with no dialectical tension. References Jones, R. (2013).
