Construction has been deemed as causing and contributing to excess use of global resources. The aim of sustainability assessment goes further than the design stage. Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREAM) is a rating scheme on sustainability (Alyami, Saleh and Yacine 55). Once completion, a building is reviewed with the rating and from the results awarded either good, pass, excellent, or outstanding score. It was initially developed as a marketing tool for green office structures. Factors such as site impact, energy use lighting, and heating are deliberated. Viable tool is a resource that supports decision making with regards to sustainable building and construction principles. The tools help in identifying and selecting environmentally friendly solutions in handling renovations leases and alterations. Sustainable designs are put in place to help in reducing the negative impact on the environment and the health of the occupants in the building. An integrated approach impacts the life-cycle of the building, the design, operation, construction and decommissioning. References Alyami, Saleh H., and Yacine Rezgui. "Sustainable building assessment tool development approach." Sustainable Cities and Society 5 (2012): 52-62.
