Sustainable development in society has been promoted as a holistic concept. However, some barriers exist in achieving sustainable development. Innovation barriers have been pointed out as an issue that drags sustainability. Inadequate research on the concept of sustainability has been a problematic issue. There is a gap that exists in the transfer of knowledge from research institutes to implement real-life applications. The social barriers in society also make it a challenge. The growing populations matched with unsustainable consumption and production patterns have derailed the plans of sustainability. An inadequate monitoring and evaluation system and lack of targets in sustainability cause a derailment. The measurement of data and tracking progress is limited. The lack of data that can be utilized as information results in poor decision implementation with regards to the issue. The right policies set by governments may help in achieving sustainability (Szeto, Xiaoqing and Wong 23). The correct legislation gives the direction in combating the issue. Funds and grants need to be offered into research institutes to continue with R&D on sustainability. The innovations from the process may help in a step to improving on greener solutions to the conservation of the environment and reducing the carbon footprint. Reference Szeto, W. Y., Xiaoqing Jaber, and S. C. Wong. "Road network equilibrium approaches to environmental sustainability." Transport Reviews 32.4 (2012): 491-518.
