For a long time, Newark has suffered from myriad challenges including discrimination, high poverty rates, police brutalities, violence, and corruption. These are some of the issues that have made the area lag behind in terms of development. However, in recent years, economic growth has been experienced partly due to the numerous community initiatives focused on community wealth building by engaging the citizens as partners. A good example is Greater Newark Enterprise Corporation. GNEC is a community development initiative that focuses on the provision of financial services and support to low-income families. The initiative also works towards financing job creation, community facilities, and growth and development of small businesses. Although GNEC has its headquarters located in Newark, it carries out its mission by working among the communities throughout the entire New Jersey. The sole purpose for the existence of this community initiative is to help entrepreneurs to start and grow business. All these are done by providing the resources as well as capital necessary for the success of a business. One of the greatest motivations for the organization is the belief that entrepreneurs, who leverage resources available to them, are the ones that ultimately succeed. However, lack of the resource and capital has been the greatest challenge to most entrepreneurs in Newark and most parts of New Jersey. That is the reason why the corporation was initiated. Since its inception in 2005, GNEC has offered more than $5 million to finance various businesses. Similarly, it has been able to create approximately 400 jobs. In addition, until now, the corporation has provided entrepreneurial training to about 500 prospective business owners. Therefore, the community initiative has come handy to incorporate the citizens in the development process of the region. References Greater Newark Enterprise Corporation.
