Identity Theft: Increasing Threat — Identity theft is one of the fastest growing financial crimes in the US. An estimated $16 billion was stolen from 15.4 million US consumers in 2016, compared with $15.3 billion and 13.1 million victims the previous year, according to the Insurance Information Institute. In the past six years, identity thieves have stolen more than $107 billion. Cybercrime is also rising, with payment card fraud, including credit, debit, and ATM card fraud, the most common, claiming a third more victim than other types of fraud. The chances of catching and convicting an identity theft criminal are less than half of one percent.
Renewed Focus on Risk Management — High levels of risk taking, primarily related to mortgages and mortgage-backed securities, led to widespread losses in the financial and insurance sector during the late 2000s. Industry leaders have called for new business models that reflect sounder risk management principles and increased transparency of risk. Financial firms will likely expand their risk management units to increase long-term profitability. 
Executive Pay Guidelines — Scrutiny of executive pay has elevated since the government bailouts during the late 2000s recession. New regulations put restrictions on pay for the top leaders of large firms that took bailout funds. Those companies could lose executive talent to smaller, boutique firms not subject to restrictions on executive pay and bonuses. Many boutique firms did not ask for bailout money, leaving them free to recruit top officers from larger firms who do not want their salaries and bonuses capped by the federal government.
