Can you tell me some of the history of the company? Well, the company was founded in Scotland back in 1982. Strong relations were formed with Baker Hughes which made expansion possible. During early 2001 we started growing via acquisition. In 2006 the company was bought by Sumitomo. Since we have opened an additional 3 locations and acquired 2 more additional companies.
Can you tell me about the development of the company? Unsure what you mean by the question, but the company has always been a culture of one. Meaning its 1 company, its 1 fight and its 1 team. That has been the foundation of Howco. No other company I have ever seen takes this more seriously. There has been people here at Howco their entire adult lives and have sons and daughters working for Howco. You do not grow a company without that kind of ‘team sense’.
What’s one way you expect the company or the industry to change in the next year to five years? As I said, we see a great future on the horizon for our industry. Our recent developments with new die cutting technology will help to bridge the gap that we see coming with electronic cars etc. There will always be a need for oil / gas but you have to engage in markets that you see expansion opportunities.
If you could change one thing about the company you work for, what would it be? The hours! With so much expansion across the globe, I do miss the smaller management team. It is needed now of course, but if I could change anything it would be to bring the senior management back under the same roof.
How do you believe that company culture relates to employee productivity and turnover? We have the lowest turnover rate in the industry. Our employees believe in the work we do and they believe in the vision of the senior management team. We deliver on our promise every day to our employees and our shareholders.
In terms of diversity in the workplace, how has Howco changed since you began working for the company? Diversity comes in many flavors. Are we as diverse as we would like to be? No. Are we more diverse then we were 15 years ago, absolutely. We believe in investing in individuals who bring a new aspect of thinking and can contribute on different levels. If we hired robots, we would not be in the position we are today.
In your opinion, do you think that diversity plays a key role in a company’s success? Yes, I do. Because we are a global company I would never begin to understand how the optics would be if we did not have diversity. It would be a disaster.
Is diversity one of the company’s priorities/strategies? No. This is something that is grown from not even trying. Our culture requires it. It is not something we can buy off the shelf. You know it when you see it, if that makes sense.
On the Howco website, it is mentioned that the company is committed to ensuring equal pay for equal work. Do you believe that this effort can improve productivity, morale, motivation, and eventually help the company to be more competitive against rivalries? It’s the standard we choose to stick with. We mean it when we say it. It is not lip service. Regardless of age, sex, religion or race.
