Instructions: Answer the following questions and submit the answer to the dropbox. Your grade is based on the quality of your answer; however, your grade will be lowered for not following the format requirements.
Formatting requirements: Your answers need to be typed, double spaced, using 12-pt Times New Roman font. If you use MS Word, remove the extra spacing when you hit enter. You may have already done this. If not, click on the paragraph option. Under spacing, it has before and after. Set those to 0. You are to have standard margins (1 inch all sides). Submit in standard file formats, doc, docx, rtf, odt. Do not submit using Apple product formats because they are proprietary.
You are limited to 4 pages. Do not write more than that. You can write less than 4 pages.
Advice: Avoiding quotations. Quoting just gives me what the author writes. It does not give me an explanation and often you can make the point more succulently without the quote.
Set up:
Hayek offers an account of human history where humans started out in small primitive tribes. In these tribes, people have specific obligations to and within the tribe. Over time, the morality of specific obligatory ends one has to and within the tribe is replaced by a morality of abstract rules. According to Hayek, it is these abstract rules that created the spontaneous order of the market. (Spontaneous order is where order is achieved through human action, but not through human design.) In other words, modern society is built upon a market economy. Human society would not work on the scale is does with markets, (e.g. we would still live in small tribes). A market economy is only possible because we have a set of abstract rules that allows spontaneous organization. If we kept the morality of the tribe, then modern society would not have been possible.
Cohen, in arguing for what he calls socialism, uses a story of a camping trip to illustrate the desirability of a socialist society. It is a society that is built around the principles of equality and community.
With this is mind, answer the following:
Explain the concept of communal caring that Cohen advocates. Be sure to include how the ideal of the community eliminates or at least severely reduces economic inequality in society.
To what extent, if any, do you think that Cohen’s ideal society built on his ideal of community is similar to Hayek’s account of the emotions and morality of primitive communal tribes that humans used to live in? Justify your answer.
Do you find Cohen’s ‘socialist’ ideal desirable? Is his socialism more of less desirable than Rawls’ difference principle? Why or why not?
Cohen argues that socialism, or at least market socialism, is a feasible possibility. In light of Hayek, and other readings if you want to bring them in, is Cohen right? That is, do you believe that socialism is, or could be, a feasible option for our world, or is it only possible for small-scale activities like a camping trip (or maybe you do not even think that is possible)? Why or why not? Justify your answer
