Assignment 1: Ethical Analysis Paper
Select one of the following topics and write a 5–6 page paper.
First, discuss the origin of your moral (or ethical) values. You should probably devote the first 2 to 3 pages of your essay to this task. In those pages, show the reader where in your upbringing and training you came by your most fundamental, or most important, moral values. This will set the stage for the next part of your paper, in which you consider how your moral values fit into “The Thinker’s Guide to Moral Decision Making,” presented on pages 386 to 401 of Chaffee (2019); this part of our textbook makes recommendations regarding how we can improve our approach to moral decision making. For instance, do the values that you have adopted and cultivated indicate that you have included the ethic of justice in your moral compass, or that you have chosen to be a moral person (the “or” here is not exclusive)? Do your best to connect your values to at least two of the recommendations that Chaffee makes in this part of the text, laying out the connections between your values, as you understand them, and Chaffee’s recommendations as clearly as possible for the reader. Finally, choose at least one of the recommendations Chaffee lists that your values do not seem to reflect, as a recommendation that you would like to adopt (or as advice that you would like to follow), and explain both why you have some interest in following this recommendation, and how you could begin to implement the recommendation in your life in the near-term future.
In the writings of Peter Singer, Garrett Hardin, and Gustavo Gutierrez (as presented in the assigned reading by John Dear) we have three different views on poverty and of our moral obligations with regard to it. After reading all three authors, pick the one that you would like to pair with Hardin (either Singer or Gutierrez). For both Hardin and the other author you've chosen, determine which values are driving the ethical reasoning that each employs. Demonstrate to the reader that these authors are employing these values. (You might see these authors arguing from justice, from compassion, from prudence, from human well-being, or from piety or godliness; to name a few values.) Now summarize each author's arguments, paying special attention to how each argues from basic values, or at least manifests values in the reasoning that he provides. Finally, pick at least one value from each of the two authors that you would like to endorse. Construct your own argument regarding how we should treat the poor, using the values you have selected as your starting points. This will enable you to synthesize the views that have most impressed you by adopting and employing what you take to be best values manifested by each. (Helpful hint: the piece by Peter Singer at issue here is found in Chaffee (2019), pages 409-414; so it is not listed separately in the syllabus.)
