Your
Social Life: “Are You a Fox or a Hedgehog?”
What does your social life tell
about you? Using the parable of the fox
and the Hedgehog, Pamela Haag in her article “ Your Social Life: “ Are you a
Fox Or a Hedgehog?”, outlines the social characteristics of a Fox and a
Hedgehog. She compares the traits to human interactions, especially through
social media. She says,” The hedgehog probes
deeply and narrowly; the fox skims lightly and broadly.” Do social interactions
define who we are? To what extent do social interactions affect our day to day
livelihoods.
The hedgehog
social life is one where one knows a lot and enough about a few friends. Of the
few friends, you are close to you feel more connected and know almost
everything about them. You are more willing to help them whenever they ask you
for your help. It is also easy for you to focus your attention to them whenever
they call fo it regardless of the time and moment. Pamela gives an example of a
situation where your close friend makes a call at 3.30 am, regardless of how
late it is, you feel the obligation to answer the call.
The fox social life is one that differs a lot from the hedgehog’s. They
happen to have so many acquaintances by they know very little about them.
