The Black Table

Is racial segregation in our minds? This is one question that Graham Lawrence doesn’t have an answer to. Graham gives an account of his high school years in Westchester County, where there was a black table where the black kids used to sit during lunchtime. According to him, when he went back to school, 14 years after he had cleared his high school, he was shocked to find that the table still exists.

Graham could not withstand sitting on the black table together with the other black kids for fear of segregation. The three hours that they spent in the cafeteria each day during his junior high school years, the black table was a source of dread and fear whenever he came across it. In the cafeteria, apart from the black table, there were other tables
