In cultural and social differences, gender refers to the state of being male or female. Some of the concepts that aid in defining this aspect include feminine and masculine. From this affirmation, gender is a range of characteristics that differentiate between (and pertain to) femininity and masculinity. Based on the variation of contexts, gender includes sex-based social structures (such as social roles and gender roles), biological sex (to include the state of being intersex, female, or male), and gender identity (Berman, Schwartz, Kurtines and Berman, 2001). Some of the complexities that have emerged from the issue of gender include social and cultural assumptions regarding the roles of members from respective groups, as well as conflicts that have arisen from changes in the people’s lifestyles. This complexity attracts a study whose main aim is to examine discipline-specific assumptions about gender. In this paper, focus lies in the independent description of the disciplines of Psychology and Sociology before exploring their assumptions regarding the concept of gender.
