Evidence of Ecofeminism from the Novels: Away, Cleave, and Dirt Music

Ecofeminism is considered as a political and the philosophical theory that combines ecological matters with feminist ideologies due to male domination of societal matters. The exploitation of the female gender has existed for a long time and this field tries to view humanity as gendered in a manner that leads to subordination, exploitation, and oppression of women. Three novels, Away by Jane Urquhart, Dirt Music by Tim Winston, and Cleave by Nickki Gemmell are analyzed for themes that explain the concept of ecofeminism.

In the novel Dirt Music by Tim Winston, ecofeminism is depicted in various ways such as through the theme of overexploitation of natural resources, environmental neglect, and adverse weather conditions. Environmental neglect of natural resources is revealed through the description of men's contribution to the environmental destruction and the plight of women under the harsh conditions of weather and male domination. Winton highlights men as destructive to nature instead of preserving it for the future generation.
