The Selfish Gene is a book written by Richard Dawkins and first published in 1976 by Oxford Publishing focusing on evolution. The author utilises the theory of George Williams work “Adaptation and Natural Selection (1966) in which the phrase, ‘selfish gene’ refers to the idea of evolution as viewed from the gene theory in contrast to the view based on organisms and groups as argued by Hamilton D.W and other evolutionists in the 1960s. The gene is always on a selfish mission of replicating itself and influence the next generation "It is finally time to return to the problem with which we started, to the tension between individual organism and gene as rival candidates for the central role in natural selection...” (253). The book also comes up with the word ‘meme’ to represent the unit of human cultural evolution related to the emergence of culture due to selfish replication.
