Overcrowding in Prisons

The overall crime rates in the U.S major cities are showing a tremendous decrease over the last two decades. Violent crimes and murder rates are also decreasing. However, the American prisons are still overcrowded. This condition is primarily because of increase in the number of convicts awaiting trials and petty offenders. Currently, judges are unwilling, in comparison with previous decades to release law offenders on their own recognizance (Humphreys). In a bid to discourage convicts’ release on bond, judges are setting high cash bails, which offenders are not in a position to pay thus attracting jail terms. Consequently, overcrowding in jail occurs and it has effects on the convicts, their families, and the society.
