Book review
In his book, Van Klinken presents
the controversial subject related to queer and creative practices, which
facilitates the advancement of LGBTI practices in Kenya. As an activist for HIV
gay activists, the book brings out the vulnerabilities and strengths of the
queer group in an African country with a substantial Christian following. The
stories of real people that decide to have hopes in their unique way amidst
stigma and condemnation associated with belonging to the LGBT, which is highly
condemned by Pentecostal churches in Kenya.
The LGBT try to fit in a
society that condemns what they term as their freedom, source of hope, and
happiness. Despite condemnation from the Christian Pentecostal churches, the
LGBTI community members still claim some spiritual space in Africa. During the
meeting, the writer attends Uhuru Park (Kenya). The gay group members start and
end the session with a pray (3). As such, it is impossible to classify the LGBT
as anti-religious or atheism due to the incorporation of both Christian and
secular values. Despite the high condemnation of this queer group, some people
like Wainaina decide to announce their Gay status and defend it against the
attacks (33-34). He became an activist if this group and condemned the
Pentecostal pastors for being against the behavior, which is considered
immoral. In Kenya, religion is of great importance, and the Bible guides the
moral conduct of the people. Same-sex marriage is, thus, against African
traditions and Cristian Morals.
The use of art to
express the views of this discriminated group is relevant in this book. For
instance, the author quotes the example of the video of the song Same Love that
depicts
