Currently, most people condemn slavery with the harshest words. However, that was not the case in 17th and 18th century in American society. America had embraced the art of slavery as one of the society’s norm. In fact, it is surprising to note that most Americans held the view that slavery was evil, but a necessary one. It was a common thing for the wealthy individuals in the society to hold slaves. The higher number of slaves and individually owned, the more respected he was accorded. Due to such high societal status from owning more slaves, a person could be elected to be a leader in the community. People with more slaves during those centuries had more say both socially and economically. Most of the leaders who fought for America’s independence owned many slaves[1]. This situation was common in both the Southern colonies and the Northern ones. However, there existed a great distinction between slavery in the Northern colonies or what was commonly known as the New England and the Southern colonies. What caused the difference is based on various factors including religion, environmental and political.
