Will Robots Help the American Worker?
The only thing that will help millions of American workers at the current time in our history is the opportunity simply to work and to be compensated adequately enough to support a family. This issue, while very serious, is particularly disconcerting at time when the economic crisis continues for so many American workers. The "issue summary" identifies the issue but without the dark side of the employment unemployment efficient. Although, technology is increasing versatility may (?) take some jobs away from humans, robots primarily will absorb the drudgery that humans may be glad to be rid of." He forsees a future of increased leisures and creativity for us.' Kingwell "...focuses on what it means to be human rather than machine and to live in a culture and community with other human beings. He argues that we are used to deriving much of the meaning of our lives from our work, and wonders what individuals might do with their leisure time." (p 117). This issue is not simply about workplace procedures and workplace efficiency. It is about the significance of work in peoples' lives. Change is real. Change can be extremely beneficial, but it can also be scary. Theoretically, it would be great if drudgery were never part of one's lifestyle, but that is not always the case. And if the absence of some of some drudgery is because there is no gainful employment in peoples' lives with little or no means to provide for self and others... I am sure that, at least, some drudgery would be more than acceptable. If leisure is pursued as a freely chosen activity, then that is great. If "leisure" is enforced, that is not great.

(1) Jeffrey Young argues that "A number of scholars are now arguing that all this automation could make many goods and services so cheap that full-time jobs could become optional for most people. Baxter (the robot) then, would become a liberator of the human spirit rather than an enemy of the working man." (p 120)

Mark Kingwell counter with the following observation: " The gravest danger of offloading work is not a robot uprising but a human downgrading." (p 128)

Answer this:
Look at the quotes above... (1) Young... and (2) Kingwell... they both deal with a philosphy of the human person... what is the significance of the human person.. .. of you and me? One quote is optimistic about the human person and the other does not seem to be so optimistic. Given that automation, technology, is going to be increasingly more of a force in the workplace, what do you think each of the above quote means? Which one more closely fits your own outlook? Why?
