Abstract

The shipping industry consists one of the strongest driving forces in the economy at the global level. It is indeed true to say that ninety percent of the global trade is done through the sea. The maritime industry ought to celebrate. The economic contribution of this industry is one of the most significant ones. As such, this thesis looks to determine the contribution of the shipping sector in the Danish economy, and further within the world economy. In an exploratory study of the Maersk Group, we exemplify the status of this industry within the economy. In this paper, a sustainability report will be the basis of this paper. As such, a comparative analysis of the biggest companies in Denmark will be analyzed. As it is suggested in UNCTAD 2014, the literature review investigating issues such as the history, current state, quality concerns and preceding research on the subject are explained in this reporting. As such, the content analysis is developed based on these standards.  The most commonly used framework, such as GRI standards will be adopted for use in the course of this study. Quality aspects such as transparency, materiality, assurance, stakeholder engagements and KPIs will be used. Additionally, this thesis will look into other areas of investigation within the larger subject of sustainability within this area, especially within the shipping industry.
