We are in the last week of our journey through nearly a thousand years of Western history. This week we've looked at the Enlightenment, a massive intellectual movement that spawned equally massive political changes (take HST 103 to learn more about those!).

The Enlightenment thinkers held some key ideals and goals in common, but there was a great deal of variation in their individual ideas.

In your primary document readings you looked at Kant's "What is Enlightenment." How did Kant characterize Enlightenment?

The history of the Enlightenment is often seen as a largely French story, though this was a broader European phenomenon, and it had its roots in England. What role did England play in the Enlightenment story?

What were Defoe's arguments about women? And how did this fit or not fit with more mainstream Enlightenment thought?

And finally, what was the Jewish Enlightenment?
