Mental health is a relatively new concept for various players in the healthcare industry, which brings up the question on the current landscape surrounding the insurance coverage that psychiatric consumers, the general society, and healthcare practitioners have to contend with. As a matter of social justice, the major notions that mental healthcare insurance coverage brings up relate to access to treatment as a necessity or simple formulation of policies that the industry players base their decisions. If the case is a necessity of social justice, then we are mandated as a society to offer the best medical care irrespective of one’s health issue. The treatment of mental health care as a secondary issue by insurers is a barrier to achieving effective healthcare for patients suffering from mental disorders.
