You will use the assignments as you move through the course to prepare for the separate
components of the final project. The project weaves together the critical ideas of the entire
course, including your studies, discussions, and assignments.
This course focuses on the application of ethical reasoning to issues of humanity and technology;
specifically, bioethics. After two units on understanding bioethics and ethical reasoning, you will
use the remaining units to apply that learning by analyzing case studies in clinical, research, and
public health ethics. Each of the five units will include a short analysis paper that serves as a
basis for elements in your course project. In the course project, you will construct an argument in
favor of a coherent set of ethical theories and perspectives that you will use in your personal
and/or professional life.
Use the following outline for the project:
Introduction: Draw from your manifesto in Unit 1 and your analysis paper in Unit 2 to
create an introduction to evaluating ethical approaches using philosophical reasoning.
(One to two pages.)
Theories and Perspectives in Clinical Ethics: Draw from your assignment in Unit 3 to
construct an argument for or against the approach you used in the case study. (One to two
pages.)
Theories and Perspectives in Research Ethics: Draw from your assignment in Unit 4 to
construct an argument for or against the approach you used in the case study. (One to two
pages.)
Theories and Perspectives in Public Health Ethics: Draw from your assignment in
Unit 5 to construct an argument for or against the approach you used in the case study.
(One to two pages.)
Conclusion: Argue for the continuing use of one or more theories and perspectives for
your personal and/or professional life, using concrete examples and scholarly resources,
and describing advantages and limitations of your approach. (One to two pages.)
See the Bioethics and Society Infographic for an illustration of the shift in thinking and writing
that takes place from the unit assignments to the course project.
