Write a short ‘role play’ synopsis (from the point of view of and in the voice of a policymaker of your
choice) of the Summary for Policymakers on the material from sections A, B and C only (maximum 700
words). Include content from at least one figure and one table (see below). In approaching your
summary, imagine that you are a policymaker (a civil servant or a politician) and that your purpose in
creating your own summary is to communicate to your team your understanding of the central themes
of the main sections of the Summary for Policymakers as listed below:
•Observed Impacts, Vulnerability, and Adaptation in a Complex and Changing World
•Future Risks and Opportunities for Adaptation
•Managing Future Risks and Building Resilience
You may adopt the voice of a policymaker who has specific responsibility for a specific region, sector or
theme (as defined in Section B-1). At the start of your summary, state very clearly the role and therefore
voice you have chosen to adopt. You might want to select one of the following examples, or one of your
own: ◦‘As the Minister responsible for climate change, I am sharing with you my own reading of the
IPCC’s WGII SPM’ or
◦‘As the Civil Servant responsible for coastal adaptation, I am sharing with you my own reading of the
IPCC’s WGII SPM’ or
◦‘As the Minister responsible for Africa, I am sharing with you my own reading of the IPCC’s WGII SPM.’
State your word count at the end of your answer. Overlength answers will be penalised.
Tip
It's more important to get the main points across rather than to try and capture all of the detail that is in
the Summary for Policymakers.
Marks will be allocated as follows:
•Consistency of role-play voice adopted in your synopsis (6 marks)
•Quality of the synopsis – coverage (have you left key elements out under any of the main sections
(both general and role specific?) (8 marks)
•Quality of the synopsis – originality (how well do you communicate with your own voice:
interpretation, examples, wordsmithing, in your own words) (8 marks)
•An example of your ability to translate one of the complex diagrams into impactful written language (4
marks)
•An example of your ability to translate one of the complex tables into impactful written language (4
marks).
