We will be using comparison and/or contrast to help develop the essay. You should not use the words “I” or “you” except in quotes. Looking at the notes you took from the readings, find at least three points of comparison you find interesting about the two leaders and about which you think you have enough material to write a good paragraph for each. You can choose to talk about their similarities or differences or both. You may use as many paragraphs as you need, covering more than 3 points if you would like, but making sure you have a good college length paragraph for each point discussed and appropriate supporting information. You thesis should reflect what you learned from doing the comparison. Ex: Trump and Putin may have similar approaches to ________ but they differ significantly when it comes to _______________. Your essay should have a strong thesis, use good organization and transitions, and use good grammar. You must cite your sources correctly and include a works cited page. Do not use many quotes: paraphrase and summarize most of the information you use. Use MLA style. Writers use comparison (showing similarities) and contrast (showing differences) to show why one action may be preferred to another or to show why one choice is better than another or to help the reader to make a good choice for his or her needs. Two methods of organization are commonly used for this type of paper: subject by subject or point by point. In the subject by subject method the writer uses the first part of the body to discuss one subject completely and then uses the second part of the body to compare and contrast the second subject to the first. In a point by point method of organization, the writer compares/contrasts the different subjects by looking at a few key points. You may use point by point organization to develop body paragraphs. Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence that reflects a point of comparison/contrast about both topics. The two subjects should be addressed in the same order in each paragraph. Make sure to use ample transitions within each paragraph. Don’t assume your reader will see how your subjects are alike or different just because you listed some things about them.
