Introduction
Because an organization is a complex
system of internal and external working parts, what appears to be a simple
problem to fix, may actually be more complex than anticipated. Excellent
decisions should consider the needs and impacts across the entire system. In
the following video detailing the struggles of the Campbell Soup Company, you
will see how one organization neglected to consider the overall impacts of some
major business decisions.

Off Its Perch:

As you learned in the video, the Campbell
Soup Company made decisions to acquire Bolthouse Farms and Synders-Lance,
attempting bolster declining sales by appealing to changing consumer demands.
However, they neglected to consider the infrastructure and didn’t have a team
in place with the knowledge necessary to manage a refrigerated distribution
system and they lacked an understanding of the volatility of a large-scale
fresh food business. They also faced challenges in integrating the
Snyders-Lance brand into their current operation.

Conclusion
You have seen a real-world example
of the dangers of failing to adequately consider and address the internal and
external needs of the organization and the potential consequences of a major
business decision. In your major case analysis, using a systems approach to
decision-making will help you generate viable solutions to your complex
business problem.
