Get With the Guidelines

There are arguably, more standardized protocols and pathways for the cardiovascular system than any other. This underscores, of course, the importance of the system, but also the political interest, which provides funding for research, which, in turn, informs evidence-based practice. 

While nurses must go into the physical assessment with an open mind lest we miss an unusual, unexpected finding, we also must go into the assessment understanding that in certain instances, minutes count. Our assessment findings drive the diagnostics and treatment plans, but it is imperative we move toward those decisions quickly in critical situations. 

Understanding the pathology drives quality Improvement and patient outcomes. It allows us to quickly move forward toward lifesaving and health preserving actions. To assist practitioners in making accurate assessment decisions the use of pathways based upon empirical data and expert consensus can be of great value.
