For this assignment you must provide a substantive (not lengthy) responses to 2 of the peer's postings, noting similarities, themes, different perspectives, etc. GRADING: Peer Response-Comment is substantive (not lengthy) comparing and/or contrasting themes in at least 2 peer’s postings. Comments are related to the assignment. The original assignment: Review and write a brief (maximum one-page summary) of a current, peer-reviewed journal regarding the nurse-patient relationship and then post it to the discussion board as a text entry. The summary is to be succinct, informative, and related to the assignment STUDENT 1: The article, “What kind of factors influence the care between the nurse and a patient” is primarily focused on a study within 6 key areas. The umbrella review of the evidence was: Expectations, Values, Knowledge and Skills, Communication, Context and the Impact of the relationship. The first area of the study addressed was Expectations. For the most part, a patient expects to develop a good relationship with the Nurse. Similarly, the Nurse expects the patient to be pleasant. The article stresses that both of the individuals expect a “good relationship” from the very beginning. For example, if the patient did not have a good experience in the past, the nurse can facilitate a better experience by introducing a pleasant and enjoyable atmosphere. Values were also studied and had a profound effect on the patient and nurse relationship. The ability to be kind, understanding, and humorous ranked high with all patients. Imagine a patient, feeling ill, scared, and worried about his/her medical concerns and the nurse shows no interest. A nurse must be completely engaged (eye contact) in the conversation, along with paying attention to the patient is a must. Skills and knowledge were also important to the relationship between the patient and the nurse. The patient would rather build a relationship with a nurse whose kindness is overwhelming, as opposed to a nurse whose character is impeded by competence. For example, before I started my last job at a clinic, my knowledge was limited. Soon I learned that greeting a patient with a smile could take me a long way. Communication between the patient and the nurse is instrumental for a successful relationship. The article talks about 3 types of communications, “Sophisticated, Subtle, and Ordinary communication.” As you might expect, Sophisticated communication is one of high level communication, utilizes medical terminology, which may lead to patient frustration and improper care. Subtle communication stresses the fact that nurses need to be “fully engaged” with patients in everyday conversations, not only when the need arises. The third type and probably the most preferred form of communication by the patient is “Ordinary communication.” This type of communication is favored upon because it provides the nurse the ability to build a rapport with the patient. Ordinary communication allows the nurse to begin the relationship by being courteous, truthful, and sincere. Context and environment is important in a nurse and patient relationship because patients believe nurses can provide a welcoming experience to an environment that might already be deemed by fright. The impact of the relationship between a nurse and the patient is the last area studied. Building the nurse and patient relationship with trust lays down the foundation for any type of environment, whether acute or chronic illnesses. In conclusion, the umbrella review findings established that the nurse and patient must collaborate to ensure a positive outcome and a meaningful personal interaction. Wiechula, R., Conroy, T., Kitson, A., Marshall, R., Whitaker, N., Rasmussen, P. (2016). Umbrella Review of the Evidence: What Factors Influence the Caring Relationship Between a Nurse and Patient? Journal of Advanced Nursing, 72(4), 723–734. https://onlinelibrary-wiley-com.ezproxy.lib.utexas.edu/doi/full/10.1111/jan.12862 Nursing Journal Article.pdf STUDENT 2: In the academic article “Empathy in the nurse-patient relationship in geriatric care: A integrative review,” the author focuses on the importance and benefits of empathy in the relationship between a nurse and a patient in the geriatric setting. The author starts off with the history of empathy and its introduction in the nursing profession. Empathy was only introduced in the 1970s as a concept to be used in the nurse-patient interaction. Until the late 1990s the academic literature “considered empathy to be appropriate, desirable, and therapeutic as well as a useful component of nurse-patient interaction”(Teófilo, et al., 2018). Then in the 21st century empathy was incorporated into education as a strategy to use when learning how to be effective in nurse-patient interactions. The guiding question for researching the impact of empathy is “What evidence is there on the benefits of empathetic relationships between nursing staff and older people in geriatric care settings”(Teófilo, et al., 2018). Fourteen articles were selected to analyze the psychometric assessment tools used, each used different tools to measure empathy in the nurse-patient relationship. The data collected from these studies showed that empathy is required as a prerequisite condition for compassion in the nurse-patient relationship with geriatric patients. The author specifies that this is even more important when working palliative care. Empathy as a part of the ethics of nursing is also a major theme throughout the article. Empathy plays a massive part in nursing with the geriatric population because of the importance of preservation of dignity with the aging process, managing feelings and emotions that come with the end of life and helping patients deal with difficult situations. Because of the importance of empathy in regards to geriatric population it is also important to reflect on the methods of showing empathy because it is the characteristic that older people believe makes a good nurse. The article states that further studies are needed to evaluate the nurse-patient relationship that focuses on empathy as well as a higher quality of assessment tools so that empathy can be accurately assessed. This is crucial for the future of education on the nurse-patient relationship in general, as well as in the geriatric population. Teófilo, T. J., Veras, R. F., Silva, V. A., Cunha, N. M., Oliveira, J. D., & Vasconcelos, S. C. (2018). Empathy in the nurse–patient relationship in geriatric care: An integrative review. Nursing Ethics, 26(6), 1585-1600. doi:10.1177/0969733018787228
Hello,
If you have any questions just let me know. So I posted the original assignment to post a peer-reviewed related article for the patient-nurse relationship. I just put that in the instructions to give you an idea of the overall topic.
The directions for this assignment is to respond to the 2 students who wrote about there peer-reviewed articles and substantive response. Thank you.
