Having seen Miss Representation a few times now, I feel like each viewing has me walking away feeling like the filmmakers are trying to emphasize how females are held to impossible standards in the media, thus making the average woman feeling like she needs to live up to the same standards that are portrayed in movies, magazines, and television. They say that historically, media socializes both girls and boys that women have a place in society and cannot achieve the same level of intellectual success than males can supposedly achieve. Furthermore, this makes the female gender feel like they need to live up to impossible standards when it comes to strength, beauty, and intellect. This is a result of technology like Photoshop, which makes it possible to retouch photos of models and literally give them the perfect face with the perfect physique, something that cannot be done with common cosmetics. Society then gets conditioned to believe that these perfect pictures are a representation of what women should look like. I think this extends beyond the female gender. Media socializes males as well to make them feel like they need to have status in the world in the form of a powerful job that pays a lot of money, drive a fancy car, and be able to afford fancy suits in order for a woman to find them attractive.
