Vegetarian Diet
A vegetarian refers to someone who depends mainly on foods that come from plants products
like grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables as the main source of the diet, ("Vegetarian Society - Definition of a Vegetarian",
2016). Vegetarians avoid animal products. According to, ("Vegetarian diet", 2016), a vegetarian diet is made
up of foods that come from plants. Specific examples of this plants include
Vegetables, whole grains, seeds, nuts legumes and fruits. However, in some
instances, the diet may contain eggs and milk. A vegetarian diet does not
contain animal proteins. Vegetarians do not take animal products such as Fowl,
lamb, beef, pork or fish. People tend to shift to vegetarianism due to healthy,
economic and religious factors. According to ("Vegetarian diet",
2016), the following types of vegetarian diets exists.
Vegan diet, which is only composed of plant based foods
only. In this type of diet, there is no use of any proteins from animals or the
animals by products e.g. honey, milk or eggs. The next type is Lacto-
vegetarian diet and is characterised by the use of both the dairy products in
addition to plant products. In lacto- ovo vegetarian, there is the use of plant
foods, daily products and eggs. Semi vegetarian diet is composed of plant
foods, chicken and their products and the dairy products. However, red meat is
not part of this diet. Lastly, Pescatarian diet is composed of plant foods and
the sea foods, ("Vegetarian Society - Definition of a Vegetarian",
2016).
