Giuseppe Tomasi Di
Lampedusa is an Italian author who was of a noble family. Di Lampedusa was a
successful author in both Italy and abroad, which most of his works being
published and read in many countries globally. He is widely recognized as a
writer of complex personality, with his greatest and most successful novel
being the Leopard. During his life, Di Lampedusa was a solitary character who
spent much of his time reading books (Nolan, 1966). In recalling his Childhood,
DI Lampedusa notes that he liked being more with things during his childhood as
a boy than with people. Di Lampedusa was the prince of Lampedusa and had served
in the Royal Army, where he resigned with the rank of lieutenant.
Among the many works of
literature authored by Lampedusa, some of his chief works for which he is known
to include a novel titled The Leopard, a series of short stories and
essays such as Lezioni su Stendhal and Leo Tolstoy. Other works
of literature authored by Lampedusa include Two Stories and a Memory and
Lighea. However, The Leopard is the most known work of literature
for which Lampedusa has gained a great audience, received prizes and praise from
the literature community (Nolan, 1966). The Leopard is a novel that
chronicles the social and political changes in 19th century Sicily
during the Risorgimento.
The Leopard is
a particularly interesting novel to focus upon as editors ejected it before publication
several years after Lampedusa completed it. This novel is also important as it
was written shortly before Lampedusa died from cancer diagnosed late. The
Leopard was published posthumously and has come to be identified as
Lampedusa’s masterpiece (Nolan, 1966). It is important to analyze the novel as
it was once Italy’s top-selling novel and is considered by numerous critics to
be a classic of modern Italian literature.
