Black Lives Matter
Protests on the streets
of towns in the United States (US) have become commonplace as more people rise
against police brutality directed towards the African American community. Black
Lives Matter's phrase has become synonymous with these protests, and the
organization behind the phrase is known as Black Lives Matter (BLM) Global
Network Foundation Incorporation. The Black Lives Matter organization operates
in various countries, including Canada, the United Kingdom, and the US (Rickford, 2016). The organization
aims to eradicate and fight against white supremacy while building local
community networks to disrupt state-sanctioned violence inflicted on minority
black communities.
BLM was formed in 2013
after the setting free of Trayvon Martin's murderer, George Zimmerman, who had
been accused and charged of murdering an unarmed black teenage male. The
organization was founded as a project by three radical African Americans,
including Opal Tometi, Alicia Garza, and Patrisse Cullors (Rickford, 2016). The project has
grown to gain worldwide influence and presence with a global network of more
than forty chapters. Apart from eradicating white supremacy, Black Lives Matter
aims to create safe spaces to nurture African American innovation and imagination,
emphasizing bringing happiness in the lives of members of the black community
to enable immediate improvement of their lives.
Since it was founded,
Black Lives Matter has been utilized as organizing and platform to fight
against police brutality and institutional racism. For the last seven years,
the organization has propelled conversations concerning state-sanctioned
violence targeting the Black American community (Rickford, 2016). More protests have been organized and
implemented using the organization's resources, tools, and platform. Black
Lives Matter continues to fight for the black community as it was developed to
support all black lives.
