Diplomacy and Foreign
Policy
Diplomacy and foreign
policy are strongly associated with the study of international relations and
are often confused with having similar meanings. However, as the study of
Diplomacy and foreign relations shows, there is a significant difference
between the two. A keen look at the theoretical background and practical
aspects in the study of diplomacy and foreign policy will show the difference
between the two based on the roles, actors, means, and institutions involved
with their practice in an international relations setting. The difference
between diplomacy and foreign policy s that diplomacy is involved with maintaining
peaceful relationships between two states. In contrast, foreign policy includes
general objectives that guide how one state interacts with others to create
meaningful relationships.
The study of diplomacy is
entailed with understanding the different methods and strategies which states
can use to influence the decisions of other foreign governments. The underlying
intention for diplomacy is often to achieve peaceful results in a time of
political tension or conflicts facing two countries or more (Wasike, Kimokoti,
& Wekesa, 2015). The study of diplomacy is interested in how states
can escape war or violent conflicts in their interaction with one another.
Modern diplomatic practices have evolved from the post-renaissance European
system. The history of diplomacy shows that the practice evolved from its
identification as bilateral relations of official nature between two sovereign
states.
Foreign policy is different from diplomacy as it entails general guidelines and objectives that need to be followed within the context of one foreign state interacting with other sovereign states. A good example of foreign policy is the United States’Foreign policy. As a sovereign state, the US has a foreign policy that abides by regular interactions with other states. The foreign policy documents provide guidelines and procedures of how the US should react to different actions by other sovereign states (Wasike et al., 2015). Suppose the United States wishes to engage with another country in solving economic differences.
