Overview-
Thus far in the semester, you have considered some puzzling observations and offered a research question that interests you. Now, you are tasked with describing the theory and research surrounding these dynamics. Scholarly theory and analytic research can inform how you approach your puzzle question. It can also help you hone into the specifics of what you think requires more robust research.
This assignment is thus asking you to review and report back on the research of past scholars. How have those who study partisan politics, Senate or House elections, or the power of the executive considered questions that directly relate to yours? How have they approached identifying key mechanisms and measuring influential variables? Exploring the answers to these questions will assist you as you develop your final Research Design. In addition, with this kind of insight in hand, you'll also be able to interpret and evaluate news sources and pundit analysis with greater sophistication.
Expectations
• The bibliography should include a mix of 8 sources, at least 5 of which need to be scholarly (academic and/or peer-reviewed). You need not include all the sources in your final paper, but it is useful nonetheless to gather good sources and use them to refine research design as it develops.
• Each source should be listed in APSA style citation formatting and emboldened.
• Please refer to the Class Resources module page under the Content tab of Brightspace for more details on this formatting style if need be.
• After your emboldened citation, provide a description, covering the following:
• What is the researcher's primary question of interest?
• What is the researcher's argument/theory (and thus proposed answer to the questions)
• Why is this relevant to your state, and to the dynamics of interest you wrote about in your first paper? How does this source shed light on your question of interest?
• What are the researcher's findings? Are there any issues with their approach or methodologies?
• Technical Requirements:
• 12-point font with normal (1-inch) margins
• Your name should be included in the file name
Evaluation
For this assignment, you will be graded on the 100 point scale. I will use the following criteria:
1. Does the Annotated Bibliography demonstrate that the student did appropriate research? (25%)
2. Does it address all the elements described under Expectations? (50%)
3. Does it incorporate comments and concerns voiced in the student's Puzzle Paper feedback? (15%)
4. Was it well written, proofread, and free from distracting errors? (10%)
5.
PREVIOUS PAPER
Rising Political Tensions During Elections
There are two major political parties in California, which are currently having representation in the legislature and the United States Congress. It is divided between the Democratic Party and the Republican. It has the Big Five informal institutions, including the Governor, the Assembly speaker, Assembly minority leader, Senate minority leader, and the senate president pro tempore. Generally, the political setting of my interest in California is the Electoral system. It is an organized government composed of three branches: the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary. There are only a few cases of electoral irregularities reported. Therefore the State of California has a just and fair electoral system. Concerning what I see, there is a lot of political tension in California during elections.
My observation is puzzling as there is a lot to be addressed in the State of California politics. To begin with its considerable size, law enforcement officers find it hard to control crowds during the election period, which poses a significant threat to the state. The existing research in politics and political science should try to identify the various factors leading to high tensions during election periods. They should expect to see an adverse change in behavior as voters are generally not enlightened on carrying peaceful elections. My state breaks this mold due to a lack of understanding among leaders themselves. They cannot correctly identify how to campaign peacefully without saying negative things about their opponents.
For deeper investigations, research should be carried out on the factors which lead to increased tensions during elections. This will entail researching the internet, but basically, California citizens should be given a questionnaire to state the significant reasons why their pressures increase during elections. Some of my observation's most critical questions are the momentous political challenges that lead to increased tensions, and what the government is doing about it. Law enforcement officers' role should be to research potential mechanisms.
