for a Liberal Studies Assignment)
GUIDELINES FOR A CRITICAL ANNOTATED
BIBLIOGRAPHY
A bibliography is an alphabetical
list of sources cited or relevant to a specific topic. A critical annotated
bibliography also provides a description as well as an evaluation of each
source. I have modified this format in an attempt to align with the
requirements of a Liberal Studies assignment at Ryerson.
1.
TITLE OF THE BIBLIOGRAPHY: “On White Fragility and Intersectional Critique(s).”
2.
Your
Bibliography must have 8 (eight) sources.
3.
All
items must be dated after 2010 -2020 (last 10 years).
4.
ONE PARAGRAPH INTRODUCTION 350-500
WORDS:
a.
Explain how you have approached
the topic and how did you interpret the concept of “Multiple Identities,”
“Struggles” and “Muslim Women.” You must draw on at least two course authors to
justify your approach. Reference these in Endnotes.
b.
Discuss how you have taken into
account the significance of race, class, gender performance; sexual identity
etc in your bibliography.
c.
Answer the questions: What did you
learn about Women and Islam from constructing this Bibliography?
5.
Each
Bibliographic Reference must comprise three parts:
a.
Citation = a complete
bibliographic reference the source.
b.
Description= a summary of the
article/resource, its main argument, and key concepts.
c.
Evaluation= a critical analysis of its strengths and
weaknesses; an assessment of the resource in comparison and contrast with other
items in the bibliography; and a judgment about the usefulness of the resource
for learning about the topic.

6.
PARTS OF THE BIBLIOGRAPHY
A)
Citation: The aim of the Citation is to tell us where to find
the item.
A Citation includes:
author(s), date of publication, title, and publisher's name and
location
(and for articles: journal title, volume, issue and page numbers).
List each item in proper MLA style available at the
following sites:

B)
Description/Summary.
§ Important: A Summary is not an Abstract that
you might find at the beginning of a published item. The aim of the Description
is to tell us what to expect to find in the source.
The summary part should answer the following
questions:
a.
What
Type of Source is it? See more information about Types of Sources below e.g.
book chapter, journal article, facebook post; webpage, tweet etc.
b.
Some background information about
the author, organization, group, who has written or created it. e.g. a
professor at a university e.g. Jasmin Zine; a media celebrity e.g. Ginella
Massa; a political leader with a large following e.g. Ilhan Omar; a sports
celebrity e.g. Stephanie Kurlow, Ballerina (@stephaniekurlow) etc. You may get
it from their webpage or other source.
c.
What motivation or reason does the
author provide for this work/article comment? Who are they seeking to address,
influence, motivate?

For a peer reviewed paper, read
the abstract and the paper to determine: the main thesis or argument; the
author’s key objectives; who they want to address.
d.
Are
there any significant details, data, (e.g. a study conducted by the author or
group, or interviews, polls, a historical review etc), important statistics,
images etc.
e.
Any other information that you
consider worthy of mention? For example, if an article or tweet was intended to
respond to a particular event such as an Islamphobic/Racist Incident; or a
special occasion such as Eid or Hajj.
C)
Evaluation/Critical
Analysis
The Critical
Analysis/Evaluative part should answer the following questions:
a.
Synthesis
of the key argument.
b.
Compare
and contrast each source with at least one other reading/item from your
research. For example, does it add new or different information; add a
different perspective; provide more detail; offers an argument that contradicts
your selected reading/another resource.
c.
Did you
find this source useful? How did this resource add to what you already learnt
about the topic.
7.
TYPES OF SOURCES:
a.
Scholarly sources including: peer-reviewed
journal articles; non-peer reviewed journal articles; books, book chapters.
Indicate online or not. Check proper style for citing online and hard copy
Scholarly materials.
List 2 scholarly sources of which
at least TWO must be peer reviewed.
b.
Popular articles: Newspaper and
magazine articles online or hardcopy.
You can include trade journals in
this category e.g. Business Insider if needed.
List 2 of this type of source.
c.
Electronic or digital sources:
websites, blogs, films, TV, dedicated to the topic or relevant to the topic.
List 2 of these.
d.
Social Media: Facebook, twitter,
Tik Tok etc
List 2 of these.
8.
FORMAT: 12 pt. Times Roman type, double
spaced 1-inch margin.
9.
LENGTH: For each item listed the
Description + Evaluation = 150 to 200 words. For 8 plus Introduction: 1600 +
500 = 2000 words approximately. ***MLA Citation not included in total word
count.
10. SUBMIT
THROUGH TURNIT IN. If your Turnitin score is more than 35% (i.e. beyond the approximate
word count of citations), you need to rework your bibliography to reduce your
score.

Critical Analysis

thorough reading/engagement with the resource.

annotations.

a) Badly constructed or vague arguments;
b) Does not complete all the tasks for critical analysis or does
them unevenly.

The critical analysis is hard to follow.

5. Overall Quality

sentences, proper spelling, grammar etc.
