The Renaissance in Italy focused on the retrieval and revival of classical studies and then expanded to include more interest in the vernacular language and literature. The English Renaissance, while inspired by classicism as well, was from its inception focused on vernacular literature, including poetry, but particularly drama and music, which differentiates it from developments in Italy. The culture of the Renaissance in England culminated in the drama of Shakespeare, the poetry of Donne and Spenser, and the music of William Byrd. It was promoted to some degree by Henry VIII early in his reign and, later, more so by his daughter, Elizabeth, who created one of the most vibrant court cultures in Europe at the time
