Beliefs about gender extends into occupational activities based on the presumption of perceived gender weaknesses and strengths. Women are held to be more sociable and rationally inclined into be occupied with family related careers consequently bringing dependency complex in women on their husbands on the matters of income.

             Segregation in labor market starts early on the way boys and girls perceive different subjects early in high schools and college with male dominance in mathematics, engineering, and statistics while girls tend to choose nonscientific subjects which are of less demand and poor remuneration. These early choices lead to discrediting wage gaps later in life.

According to Correl, this gender-based discrimination, and other structural constraints continue to limit the occupational opportunities available to women in the labor market due to the voluntary nature of career choices in high school (2001).
