Video 2: Critical Analysis
In
the video titled An Introduction to
Social Stratification, Robert M. Anthony has taken the center stage to
explain to the audience the main definition of real-world while providing the
real examples on the social stratifications. The issue of social stratification
affects everyone in society is not in any way a reflection of the
difference among individuals in society. For instance, there are some
children who are born from wealthy families who have the chance to have a
healthy and good lifestyle compare to those who are born in a poor family.
These kinds of children stand higher chances of succeeding in life especially
their work because they received a good education. They are also able to live a
better life when they become old.
Anthony
however, made a good point when he indicated that neither poverty nor wealth had
the potential to create social stratification because the system shapes their
lives. This is true because parents can pass their social position to their
children which may affect them in future. This is what leads to inequality that
people experience in life from one generation to another. There are some
individuals in the society who will retain certain social strata because of
their status which was passed to them over their generations (Anthony, n.d).
This mainly happens among wealthy individuals because they come to inherit
their parent’s wealth. However, this is not the case for the poor who have to
decide where they want to stand within society. As a person grows up, they
can determine their social status in society regardless of their family
name or economic background. Hard-work applies in this case especially if a
person from the poor stratum wants to make a name to exist among the rich or
the wealth. They have the potential to either remain poor or possess the same
amount of wealth, privileges and power like the rich people. This will make the
fall in the rich or wealthy category of social stratum.
