EXCERPT OF THE PAPER
The
Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein. December 2007
The
American economy has been imperfect for a long period of time and this has
resulted into many protests from the people who feel uncomfortable with the
government’s spending on the markets. As most of them opposed the government’s
capital system, they devoted to initiate a new economic model that would see
the country become a superpower in capitalism. Capitalism is generally
characterised by freedom where every individual has an equal opportunity to
either succeed or fail hence it is a most preferable option over communism
where the citizens fear to protect their country from the Domino Effect. In a
capitalistic economy, private individuals or companies facilitate activities
within complex network of both prices and market. Whenever a crisis occurs, the
capitalists in the market take advantage to use the recourses left behind to
develop their entrepreneurship ideas and hence cause a permanent displacement
to the initial owners.
Moreover, most recent
research shows that a crisis in the capitalistic economy may be associated by a
total clearing of the possessions in the region of the crisis. This eventually
displaces people to seek refuge due to the devastating effect of the crisis.
Whenever a crisis occurs, it serves as a fresh market to investors hence they
will quickly deploy their activities at the area that is affected by the
crisis. As this happens, the less fortunate are driven away due to lack of
economic power. Such a characteristic is common among the neoliberals who tend
to utilize the destroyed areas to increase and expand their services while
subjecting those who do not have enough to be displaced from the area which is
viewed by neoliberal economists as a potential market frontier through which
their businesses can thrive.
