Introduction

One of the most contentious issues concerns same-sex marriages. Same sex marriages cover the unions of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender. The debatable subject of same-sex marriages covers these four dominant minority groups. Even though certain sections of the Australian population are still against same sex marriages either because of religion, personal reasons or values, the population of the group is noteworthy. In a survey carried out in 2016 by the National Drug Strategy Household Survey 3.2 % of the adults identified selves as belonging to the LGBT group. In the same study, 2.4% of the study population was not sure about their orientations (Baidawi and Cave, 2017). These statistics showed that even though the LGBT group in Australia appears as a special group their numbers is worth noticing. The most significant question is whether we should legally recognize gay marriages.

Why we should Legally Recognize Gay Marriages

Previously, the subject of gay marriages in Australia involved promising discussion but nothing concrete was coming out of the dialogues. This situation was in spite of the fact that gay couples have been part of the society. The biggest milestone on the issue of same sex marriages was the government’s survey carried out in 2017. The study findings showed that an overwhelming 61.6 percent of the 12.7 million Australians voted for same-sex marriages, while 38.4 per cent voted no.
