Description: In your first essay, you will examine, analyze, and comment on one of the arguments made in the articles that we have discussed in class. The purpose of the essay is to examine the way in which the authors constructed their argument and determine whether or not it is effective. There are many questions that a strong essay will answer, including but not limited to
- What audience is this essay written for? Does the author use an appropriate tone for that audience?
- What is the author's argument? Do they have a thesis statement?
- How does the author attempt to prove his or her point? How weighty are their examples?
- Does the author use Pathos, Ethos, or Logos to prove their prior? Do they favor one of the three.
- Do the author follow a narration model, point-counterpoint? How do they use quotes from other sources, and do thoses quoters qualify as expert testimonies?

It is important to recognize that even though you personally are taking a side in your essay, this is not a personal narrative. This essay should be constructed in the third person, unbiased prose, with first-person being unnecessary.
Do not: Argue whether or not you personally agree with the author, nor whether or not you are in favor of the issue they raise. You are not constructing an argument regarding an issue, but rather you are determining whether the author's argument is effectively structured.
Formatting
All essays in this class will follow MLA formatting. Your font should be 12 point Times New Roman with 1-inch margins. the paper will have a minimum length of 750 words (not to exceed 1000) and be double spaced. the word count does not include the works cited page or the heading and title. It should include a header in the top right corner with your last name and the page number. All papers must be stapled. Any questions about formatting should de be directed to me via email or in class.
Submitting:
All essays must be submitted to Turnitin through eCourses before February 11th at the beginning of class. In addition, all students will bring a hard copy of their essay to class. If you are unable to be in class on February 12th, you must notify me beforehand. Late submissions will be a deduction of 5 points per day late.
