Salvation in Exodus
portrays God as a savior. As a result, Salvation is defined as acts of rescue,
emancipation, and deliverance of God's people from powers that oppress them. For
instance, God liberated the Israelites from slavery in the land of Egypt. They
had been enslaved for 400 years, being ruled by the Pharaohs. During that time,
they were forced to work under harsh conditions with little or no pay.
Moreover,
food was scarce, and people were forced to live under makeshift houses. Furthermore,
they were whipped continuously whenever they provoked the Egyptian officials. However,
salvation was brought to them through the story of Moses. Moses was sent by God
to free the people of God from Egypt and lead them to the Promised Land. This
would be the place where they would found their new community. Therefore, by
agreeing to leave the land of Egypt, they rejected the Egyptian values and the
worship of their gods. Also, it was through the Exodus that results in the
establishment of the Israelite nation in the Promised Land. Through their
journey in the wilderness, God gives them laws in the form of the Ten
Commandments that were aimed at shaping their lives based on values that
pleases God. They finally entered the Promised Land under the leadership of
Joshua. This shows that salvation was attained by being freed from the
oppressive rule of the Egyptians. The Exodus Deity is God.
