The
Changing of Family Structure
Introduction
A family is a combination
of individuals, who lives together and they have a relationship on birth,
marriage, or adoption. In the conventional family arrangements, members such as
the aunts and uncles who regularly care for their niece and nephews do not fit,
as family members of an arrangement(Muncie, 1995).
Nonetheless, in many cultures in the today’s world, non-parental adults are
also taken as part of a family arrangement if they play the significant role of
raising or looking after the children of other people. Many scholars have
touched on this subject of family structure, as they intend to present
information on how individuals in an area are grouped into the various family
arrangement.
With the above facts, the
family formation pattern or structures are also changing. Irrefutably, in the
current world, both men and women are mostly focusing on how to establish themselves
in the labor market before forming a family. Due to this, the age of a mother
at her first childbirth has changed, as it has risen, which is giving many
parents to have fewer children than it was for the previous generation.
According to the U.S Census Bureau, there is no single form of a family
structure, as due to the childbirth control and labor market factors many
people in the modern world has smaller families, whereby the number of children
within a family is below two, while some women remain childless (Coltrane, and
Randall, 2011). Therefore, this paper focuses on examining the family changes
that has occurred for the last thirty years. For this study, to understand the
changing of the family, the primary area of concentration is the family
structure and the role of the traditional family in the current changes.
Family structure is
something that shows several variations on families, as they demonstrate the
arrangement of a group of people. Over the years, family structure continues to
change and due to the changing of the family structures and it is evident that
families are no longer standards as each family structure has different meaning
and presentations.
