including lecture notes, lecture PowerPoints, handouts and the articles
assigned. Do not share your work with any students. If another student uses
your work, you will both receive a failing grade.

Your argument needs to be
thorough enough to address the case, applying the moral theories. This applies
for all of the cases. A summary of the theories in on the class page
(resources).

Discuss this case from the
perspective of two of the following ethical approaches: Utilitarianism (Hedonistic, Act and Rule), Kantian Deontology (3 versions), and Aristotelian Virtue. Choose one other approach from the following
list: Neo-Kantianism, or the Ethic of Care.
- Please explicitly address each theory in your
answer (whenever applicable). You must incorporate and cite the course
readings. Your answer should not be more than 30% quotes. No outside sources.
Answers should not come from the web.
- Use the readings, PowerPoints, articles, lectures
notes and resources on sexuality, gender, marriage and the family, and
masculinity to address your case.
Case for Final Exam
As of the year 2002, Ethiopia has been in
the midst of an economic and health catastrophe. A drought, the heavy burden of
foreign debt, and a poor economy have contributed to a devastating famine.
Presently somewhere between 11.3 and 14.3 million people (20% of Ethiopia’s
population) will need food in order to avert hunger and starvation. The amount
of money needed to avert a humanitarian crisis is about $500 million U.S.
dollars.
The population of Ethiopia is extremely
vulnerable to natural disasters because it lacks a basic infrastructure,
economic development, and public health programs. The country is one of the
poorest in the world. Life expectancy is only 49.3 years, over ¾ of the
population lives in poverty, adult illiteracy is at 60%, more than ¾ of the
population drink from unsafe water sources, and more than half of the country’s
people are sick with HIV/AIDS. Ethiopia has been at war with its neighbor
Eretria for more than a decade and spends a huge amount of its income in
weapons and munitions. The U.S. provides $100 million in aid, but this money is
not all used for food; it is used for weapons and to pay down their foreign
debt. Many have called on Congress to increase humanitarian aid. Some object to
the cost particularly with our own hardships, but still others point out that
we spend about a billion dollars a month in our wars, and have paid $20 billion
dollars to reconstruct Iraq.
Discuss why we have a moral responsibility
to give aid to Ethiopia in order to avert starvation. In addition to money,
what other ways can we help? How much should we give? What policies should we
encourage our leaders to enact? Do the causes and ongoing problems make any
difference in whether or not we should respond? How responsible are we for what
is going on in the Third World (Developing Nations)?
