Death Penalty and Ethics

Death Penalty is still prevalent in the U.S, with the punishment present in 29 U.S States. In 2018, there were 25 capital punishments in the U.S (CNN Library, 2019). The law in some of the U.S States is clear on the awaiting punishment for capital offenders. The executions are therefore within the jurisdiction. The legal rights of the offenders ensure that the offenders will only qualify for capital punishments because of their actions. On the other hand, in the case of moral right, certain groups are for capital punishment while the other group is against the sentence. The groups that support capital punishment assert that it helps to protect the persons that respect the law. Conversely, those who oppose the punishment claim that no one can remove the life of the other person.

Ethical egoist will claim that capital punishment will protect society against bad elements such as the law offender. A deontologist and a rights ethicist will be against the move since the action is wrong even though it might have a desirable outcome to the members of the public. To a deontologist, and a rights ethicist, action determines if the activity is moral or immoral.
