Reasons for classifying drugs.
Classification of drugs has the following reasons;
It creates easy time and efficiency in the identification
Several drugs are used for different purposes and sometimes due to a large number of drugs it
becomes critical to establish them.
For easy identification, it is very important for the drugs to be classified.
Different drugs are meant for different purposes which give room for classification based on the use and the
intended function of the drugs when taken (Freshwater & Maslin-Prothero, 2005).
For pharmaceutical Arrangement
The classification of the drugs gives an easy time for a logical arrangement for easy tracing (Klefenz
& service, 2012). In the pharmacies and drug stores have to be well arranged for easy identification and
avoid mix-ups for the drugs (Freshwater & Maslin-Prothero, 2005).
Description of drugs classification.
Opiates/Narcotic analgesics; they are drugs that suppress a cough, suppress Opiate withdrawal, and
sedation.
Opiate Antagonists; Block the effects of narcotics used to trace Opiate Overdose.
Psychomotor stimulants; effects including caffeine which has aspirin with OTC pain relievers.
Barbiturates; decrease in CNS arousal with hypnotic effects.
Psychogenic; produce altered states of consciousness.
Volatile insolvents; produce a feeling of intoxication.
Volatile Anesthetics; used for therapeutically for anesthesia.
Antimanic; it dampens extreme mood swings in some people.
Antidepressants; used for therapeutically to treat depression (Freshwater & Maslin-Prothero, 2005).
Chemotherapy and disease treatment.
Chemotherapy is the use of medicines to treat some diseases like cancer which uses one or more of
the anti-cancer drugs which are used as standardized chemotherapy regimen (Chemotherapy, 2011).
Chemotherapy is abbreviated as chemo which is mainly meant for slowing or stopping the multiplication of
cancerous cells in the body of the patient. The method of treating cancer is also considered a systemic
therapy which means that they affect the entire body of the patient. The main target of the chemotherapy
drugs is rapidly growing cancerous cells, which sometimes also affect the healthy cells which grow rapidly.
However, beyond the good faith that chemotherapy is done for it has its side effects where the blood cells
which also divide rapidly are also damaged by the chemo process. Chemotherapy may be given with
addition to curative intent which may be aimed at prolonging life and reduce symptoms to the cancer patient
(Freshwater & Maslin-Prothero, 2005).
Examples on how contrast media are used in producing an image.
Medical contrast medium is a substance which is used for the enhancement of contrast of structures
within the body in the medical imaging. Some of the examples of the contrast imaging are
X-ray where iodinated contrast media exists.
MR signal which uses the Gadolinium using the MRI contrast agent.
Ultrasound scattering and frequency shift which used the microbubble contrast agents in aid to
sonographic examination and the detection of a cardiac shunt.
