I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO is a reflection of James Baldwins soaring work as directed by Raoul
Peck. When critically analyzed, the work envisioned Baldwin unfinished work called Remember this House.
Baldwin intended to make that book a personal account of the lives of the three activist friends who all of
them were killed before they came close to their 40th birthday. The three crucial people in American history
were Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Merger Evers. Although the work navigates through the white
supremacist United States, the film is often described as a film about whiteness even though it features key
events in 20th Century African American history.
Many reasons show that indeed the documentary is about witnesses. First, Baldwin uses the 1958
movie called the Defiant Ones by using the two main characters metaphorically to explain the difference
between how the blacks and the whites think about the controversial issue of racism in the United States. In
the movie, two convicts attempt to find freedom by escaping. In one of the scenes, the two convicts were
chasing the train, one of them (Cullen) who was black got on while the other (Johnson) who was white did
not. Instead of escaping even when he and a chance, Cullen jumps off the train to stay with Jonson. For
black people this was disgusting. Whoever, for the white people, it was a clear indication that even with the
dominant white supremacy and racism narratives in America, blacks still tolerate and loves them. This part
depicted the real situation with racism in America. The film uses the two characters to show the difference in
Whitemans rage and Blackmans rage. For blacks, the rage is due to oppression and white supremacy. On the
contrary, whites rage is because they do not want to lose the role of the oppressor, as it would affect their
position in the society in case equality takes over
Moreover, another aspect of the movie that gives it witness feature is the use of the 1957 movie,
Pajama where Baldwin shows how it is easy for the white people to move around the globe but do not have
to interact with black people physically, emotionally and intellectually. In the movie, Baldwin stars the Doris
Day, a scene that occurs once a year. In the scene, a large group of people is seen having a good time at the
park. As a way of enjoying the day, the people in the party engages in merry-making activities like singing,
dancing, and having a great moment under a big blue sky. The depiction of the scene shows that the whites
have the ease of being obvious and free in this world. Besides, it is also clear that among the large group of
people, there is no single person of color. People of color might not have been entitled to have fun, as it was
believed fun belonged to the superior race.
