Introduction
The modern business environment has been significantly modified due to the continuous
advancement of technology. Technology and innovation have changed the way business operations are
carried out on a daily basis. Ideally, every single aspect of businesses has been changed. Aspects such as
communication and the conduct of financial transactions have been revolutionized, and as a result, more
fluent and flexible processes have been realized. The adaptation of the various technologies that exist in this
age of information is crucial towards ensuring the business stays adrift with competitors and stays profitable
in the face of the uncertainty brought about by continuous technological advances.
Problem Statement
Traditional brick-and-mortar shopping or retail stores have for long been using traditional methods
that require the client to physically visit the store, locate the item, and purchase it. This process was very
tiresome and engaged the customer unnecessarily. Consequently, the staff at the store or shopping centers
had to deal with large amounts of customer information that included a cumbersome process of keying in
data into computers and databases which was prone to many errors and mistakes (Rainer et al., 2013)
. Moreover, customers had to wait in lines to be served at these stores which proved unsatisfactory for the
purposes of purchasing a single item. The security and privacy of consumer information was also debatable
issue and could often jeopardize the reputation of the company.
However, technological advancement has made the process of shopping easier by transferring all the
functions of the stores online where they are accessible to the customer at the press of a button. These
technological solutions are geared towards providing easy customer data management, stress-free
communication, online ordering of items that can be delivered at the customer's premises, security and
privacy of customer information as well as simplified the process of locating an item, checking for its
suitability and finally purchasing it through an online platform. By creating an online presence, the brick
and mortar stores are bound to attract more customers with a diverse portfolio of preferences on various
types of products. Not only will technology enhance the provision of mundane business services but also
guarantee the growth of the company in an effective and efficient manner (Kim & Peterson, 2017).
Two Technologies
There are two specific technologies that are critical to creating and maintaining a suitable online
presence for a previously brick and-mortar store. These technologies include social computing and mobile
computing. Social computing involved the use of interactive media platforms that create a viable opportunity
for the company to interact with its customers. These platforms ensure that customers can access valuable
company information regarding the products, after-sale services, and promotions and provide feedback
concerning products and services (Fang et al., 2014).
The company website is a proper means of ensuring the social connection between the customer and
the company through an online platform. The website will customize customer preferences to ensure the
information being reviewed by the customer adheres to his or her product or service preferences (Peppard &
Ward, 2016). Furthermore, the company website will act as a way to provide constant updates on product
development, upcoming promotion and deals and sales that will ensure the customers are constantly engaged
with a variety of information that guarantees their loyalty to the rand and the business establishment (
Kim & Peterson, 2017). Social computing is therefore viewed as a crucial component that will enable a
business organization to create a lasting online presence.
The second technology that will be implemented will be mobile computing, wireless and mobile
commerce. A look at the modern society will inform you of the popularity of mobile devices connected to
the internet through wireless means. For these purposes, businesses have been exploiting the opportunity
provided by mobile devices to personalize the shopping experience for every customer. This business will
also utilize the popularity of mobile computing by creating a company website that is attractive, interactive
and can be accessed by mobile computing devices (Rainer et al., 2013). This will enable customers to access
important business services at the comfort of their homes or anywhere even in transit as long as they have
their mobile phone with them.
