Part I: Introduction
A social issue in A Clockwork Orange tackles the question of whether free will and outside
influences can influence a persons outcome. The main character Alex thinks that people are born evil and
need help throughout life to evade being evil. F. Alexander (the writer character in the movie) believes that
we are all born with a clean slate and the ability to become good or evil. He also believed that we are
corrupted by society and culture (Burgess 2015). The Government believes that the success and constancy of
government is more important than the happiness of its people, and abolishes moral choice in the name of
solidity and consistency (Burgess 2015).
Part II: Sociological Approach
A perspective can be described as simply a "way of seeing" something. In a Clockwork Orange, there
is an assumption regarding the humanistic approach that humans have free will. This approach states in its
definition as well that not all behavior is predetermined. Personal agency is the humanistic name for the use
of free will which refers to the choices we make in life, the directions that we go in life, the consequences of
the decisions, and paths we follow in life. (Mortimer et al., 2003).
Social stability is the foundation for building a strong society. On the same note, social integration
and adequate socialization is requisite to attain social stability. Social institutions within the society play an
important role in ensuring social stability in the society. According to Mortima et al. (2003), social change
that occurs slowly is desirable while social change that occurs rapidly tend to threaten social disorder. This is
explained through functionalism theory which is evident in the case of A Clockwork Orange.
In relation to symbolic-interactionist theory, Alexs life is lived without any real positive and
meaningful relationships with other people or family. He does not have a real bond with his parents. They
communicate mainly through the locked door of Alexs bedroom. His friends are just like him, anti-social
and violent. Alex has no true connection with anyone, therefore he has no one to teach him that there is a
better way and that he could be a better person. He is usually ignored, taken advantage of, or loathed by
those around him. His only real connection was with his snake. Alex, in the end, is a product of the world
around him; apathetic, hollow, and spoiled.
